The tennis courts on the property of the exclusive Claremont resort on the border between Berkeley and Oakland, which was recently sold to a local real estate investment firm, were once the end of the line for a faded but not forgotten East Bay train system.

Some residual fragments of the once-lively Key System electric railroad, which interlinked the East Bay with San Francisco, hide in plain sight — such as the escape alcoves inside the Bay Bridge’s Yerba Buena Tunnel. Others are as grand as the Claremont Club & Spa.
